Un octavo período de sesiones encabezado por la ONU de las negociaciones informales entre Marruecos y el Frente Polisario sobre el Sáhara Occidental terminó en fracaso el Jueves, 21 de julio del 2011 en un suburbio de la ciudad de Nueva York. "Cada parte siguió rechazando la propuesta de la otra como la única base para futuras negociaciones", dijo Christopher Ross, el enviado de la ONU a la región.
